About Me

The COVID-19 pandemic gave me opportunities to work in different healthcare settings, where I developed adaptability, composure and teamwork. While working in a TCF, I met a nurse whose compassion and professionalism inspired me. This motivated me to take up a Therapy Support course at HMI Institute and later pursue Higher Nitec in Nursing at ITE. I am applying to NYP’s Diploma in Nursing to strengthen my clinical skills, deepen my understanding of holistic care, and grow into a competent and compassionate nurse.

In my first two years as a Higher Nitec in Nursing student, I actively participated in CCA and enrichment programmes through the ITE SNA Student Chapter and Rotaract Club. Through activities such as Meals on Wheels and befriending sessions, I served elderly residents and developed empathy, patience and communication skills in community care. I also supported stage management and logistics for the 20th Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference Singapore 2024, which strengthened my teamwork, responsibility and ability to work under pressure.

In Year 2, studying Health Psychology and Sociology deepened my interest in Mental Health Nursing. This motivated me to join SG Healthcare Corps as a Care Volunteer, and I am currently volunteering at IMH, supporting clients with their ADLs. These experiences strengthened my commitment to patient-centred care and affirmed my aspiration to become an RNP.

Fundamentals of Healthcare Ethics and Law

Topic: Truth-telling: Blowing the Whistle

Through this module, I have learnt about ethical decision-making, professionalism, teamwork and the importance of balancing veracity and fidelity in healthcare practice, and I have created a storyboard and edited the video using Adobe Premiere Pro for our assignment.

Healthcare Experience

1. COVID-19 Healthcare Operations

During the COVID-19 pandemic, my exposure to various healthcare settings, including Vaccination Centres, Swab Operations, Community Isolation/Treatment Facilities, and Transitional Care Facilities, was significant. Through these experiences, I adapted, remained calm and delivered results under pressure. I also learned that working together as a team, clear communication, and strict adherence to healthcare protocols are vital. This was my initial stage in healthcare.

2. Transitional Care Facility

During my time working in a Transitional Care Facility as a Security, I saw the dedication and compassion that nurses put into caring for patients. Seeing a nurse who combined professionalism with genuine interest encouraged me. It showed me how useful a nurse can be in a patient’s life. The experience thus made me very interested in pursuing nursing as my career.

3. Therapy Support

While awaiting the outcome of my Higher Nitec in Nursing application at ITE, I enrolled in the WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare (Therapy Support) course at HMI Institute to fuel my passion for healthcare. The programme offered me great insight into rehabilitation support services, overall patient care, and the role of healthcare providers in patient recovery and well-being. It made me more dedicated to entering the nursing profession.

4. Healthcare Assistant

After completing my Therapy Support course, I returned to the Transitional Care Facility to work as a Healthcare Assistant for three months while waiting for school to start. I supported patients with their ADLs and provided bedside care. I learnt to be calm, observant and compassionate while respecting patients’ dignity and comfort. This experience helped me develop a better understanding of patient-centred care and the roles involved in supporting healthcare teams.

Why Did I Chose NYP over NP?

I am interested in NYP’s Diploma in Nursing primarily because it is more practical, grounded in research and word of mouth, which better suits my learning needs, and, secondly, if I were to specialise in the Advanced Diploma in Nursing (Mental Health), NYP is the only training provider that offers the programme.

What Makes Me A Suitable NYP Nursing Applicant?

➤ Hands-on healthcare exposure in multiple care settings

➤ Currently pursuing a 3-year Higher Nitec in Nursing

➤ Community outreach through my CCA and volunteering with IMH

Strong interest in patient-centred and having a strong interest in Mental Health Nursing

➤ Experience in teamwork, ethics, communication, and responsibility

My ultimate objective is to work as an RN and further develop within the sector as an RNP. I am particularly interested in Mental Health Nursing as I believe psychological and emotional care are vital components of holistic patient care. I aspire to be a competent, caring nurse, and I believe NYP’s Diploma in Nursing can serve as a foundation.
