Why I Chose Nursing?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked across various health care settings, and during my time at the Transitional Care Facility (TCF), I was inspired by an exceptionally caring nurse, which then inspired me to start my journey by taking up a Therapy Support course at the HMI Institute while awaiting the outcome of my Higher Nitec in Nursing at the ITE. From such experiences, as well as my volunteer work at IMH, I realised that nursing is the path I wish to pursue, as I would have the opportunity to provide patients with holistic care, support their recovery, and do so with dignity.

In my first two years as a Higher Nitec in Nursing student, I actively participated in CCA and enrichment programmes through the ITE SNA Student Chapter and Rotaract Club. Through activities such as Meals on Wheels and befriending sessions, I served elderly residents and developed empathy, patience and communication skills in community care. I also supported stage management and logistics for the 20th Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference Singapore 2024, which strengthened my teamwork, responsibility and ability to work under pressure.

In Year 2, studying Health Psychology and Sociology deepened my interest in psychology. This motivated me to join SG Healthcare Corps as a Care Volunteer in Year 3 of my studies, and I am currently volunteering at IMH, supporting clients with their ADLs. These experiences strengthened my commitment to patient-centred care and affirmed my aspiration to become an RNP.

Why Did I Chose NYP over NP?

I am interested in NYP’s Diploma in Nursing primarily because it is more practical, grounded in research and word of mouth, which better suits my learning needs, and, secondly, if I were to specialise in the Advanced Diploma in Nursing (Mental Health) in the future, NYP is the only polytechnic that offers the programme.

Pharmacology Database

I have built a self-initiated database to consolidate my pharmacology knowledge for nursing practice. This project has deepened my understanding of medication mx and supports my goal of providing safe pt care.

Fundamentals of Healthcare Ethics and Law

I learned about ethical decision-making, professionalism, teamwork, and the importance of balancing veracity and fidelity in healthcare practice through the assigned topic (Truth-telling: Blowing the Whistle), and created a storyboard and edited the video for our assignment.

Principles of Mentoring and Coaching

I have learnt the differences between Mentoring and Coaching, developed a Professional Learning Plan to better understand and assist my juniors if I were to be a mentor or coach someday and reflected using the Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle (Description, Feelings, Evaluation, Analysis, Conclusion, Action Plan) during my oral presentation.

Healthcare Experience

<aside> 💉

1. COVID-19 Healthcare Operations

During the COVID-19 pandemic, my exposure to various healthcare settings, including Vaccination Centres, Swab Operations, Community Isolation/Treatment Facilities, and TCF, was significant. Through these experiences, I adapted, remained calm and delivered results under pressure. I also learned that working together as a team, clear communication, and strict adherence to healthcare protocols are vital. This was my initial stage in healthcare.

2. Transitional Care Facility

During my time working in a TCF as a Security, I saw the dedication and compassion that nurses put into caring for pt. Seeing a nurse who combined professionalism with genuine interest encouraged me. It showed me how useful a nurse can be in a patient’s life. The experience thus made me very interested in pursuing nursing as my career.
